Positive Behavior Interventions Support
Parents, our goal is to make Echo Shaw a happy, safe, and inspirational place for your child to learn. We appreciate your support in reinforcing our simple rules for students to Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible in every way they can. Thank you for being good partners with us.
The “Positive Behavior Interventions Support” system (PBIS) is a pro-active school-wide student behavior system that is based on three behavior expectations for all students:
- We Are Safe
- We Are Respectful
- We Are Responsible
Our staff members have worked hard to apply each of these expectations to eight different locations in our school. Teachers are teaching students exactly what the expected behavior looks like. The behavior is taught the first week of school and is re-taught three times throughout the year.
Our goal is that positive student behavior will increase. Research tells us that students should receive eight positives for every negative they receive. Our staff members work hard to reward students for positive contributions to school culture. Eagle Pride tickets are awarded for each of the three behavior expectations. Weekly, students are selected from the Eagle Pride Ticket Drawing to claim special prizes as an incentive to keep up the good work.
PBIS consists of support that is based on three levels of prevention of problematic behaviors:
- Level 1: Milder negative behaviors are handled in the classroom using intervention strategies and teachable moments, which could include a verbal reminder, redirecting through a five minute time-out or a quick re-teach.
- Level 2: If problem behaviors continue or escalate, child may be sent to a pre-arranged buddy classroom for a 5-10 minute time-out. If the behavior escalates or is of sufficient concern to begin with, the student will be escorted to the “Solve It” room to work out a solution in a positive way with support staff. This is not a “punishment” or evidence that the child is “in trouble”. Rather, this is a preventative step to help teach our children how to make good behavior choices. Parents, we believe you are always interested in your child’s experience at school, so the teacher will make contact with you when your child has visited the “Solve It” room two times in a 30 day period. However, please keep in mind that the phone call is a courtesy and not evidence that the child is in trouble or receiving a negative consequence here at school.
- Level 3: When there is a significant problem in one of the areas of Behavior Expectations, the student will be sent to the office to see the principal or other teaching staff. The school will make contact with the parent(s) to communicate the issue and corresponding action taken.
